PORT HUENEME, Calif., April 9 /PRNewswire/ — The first ARIES biodiesel production system has been delivered to Naval Base Ventura County. ARIES is the result of a collaborative effort by the U.S. Navy, Biodiesel Industries and Aerojet to produce a sustainable and reliable renewable fuel, biodiesel, using local resources. Biodiesel is a non-toxic, biodegradable replacement for petroleum diesel and can be used in all diesel engines with little or no modification.

The new system, named ARIES (Automated Real-time, Remote, Integrated Energy System), is a highly automated, transportable biodiesel production unit that can be controlled from a remote location. These features ensure reliable process control and optimal production yields in a sustainable system that can be readily and widely deployed.

Russell Teall, President and Founder of Biodiesel Industries explained, “Creating truly sustainable systems requires a thorough understanding of every aspect of biodiesel production, from feedstocks to finished products. The Integrated Energy System incorporated into ARIES will eventually allow us to generate our own heat and power, and to feed the surplus into a local micro-grid. These Energy Islands will support the local community with renewable and sustainable fuel, electricity and heat.”

A key issue with biofuel production has been the ability to access inexpensive feedstocks that do not compete with agricultural land use or the production of food.  The ability to use locally available non-food feedstocks for biodiesel requires a flexible production process, technical expertise and control not easily associated with small- scale facilities.  However, with ARIES, one data and process control center has the ability to remotely operate hundreds of scalable facilities integrated with next-generation feedstock cultivation, producing billions of gallons of biodiesel per year.

“Biodiesel Industries’ years of advanced work with jatropha, algae and other sustainable feedstocks are critically important to the ARIES platform. Our proprietary methods of feedstock development make ARIES an ideal solution for creating a globally distributed network of biodiesel production facilities,” according to JJ Rothgery, Chairman of the Board of Biodiesel Industries.

ARIES incorporates Aerojet’s systems control technologies to provide real-time sensing and management of key chemistry and processing parameters. These technologies, coupled with Biodiesel Industries’ extensive production database, allow automation of the entire process, resulting in enhanced yields, reliable quality control and personnel safety assurance.  Remote sensing also enables monitoring and operation from a single data and process control center for biodiesel production facilities in numerous locations around the world.  The capacity of the Modular Production Unit (MPU) is 3-10 million gallons per year. The Company has also designed and built a ruggedized 100,000 Mini-MPU for military use.

“Aerojet’s decades of automated systems expertise brings multiple benefits to Biodiesel Industries’ advanced biofuel processes,” said Scott Seymour, president of Aerojet.  ”The delivery of this first biodiesel production unit to the U.S. Navy heralds the first in what we hope are a series of successful demonstrations of our ability to deliver efficient and sustainable energy production for military and civilian use.”

“ARIES is ready now to be deployed on a global basis.  The ARIES platform fundamentally transforms biodiesel production and makes this possible,” explained Michael Cassady, Biodiesel Industries’ EVP and Chief Operating Officer.

Interesting article by John R. Quain regarding a Roadside Assistance application created by Mazda.  The application was created for iPhone users.  Thanks for sharing this John!

April 7, 2010, 7:30 am Roadside Assistance in an App, From Mazda

By JOHN R. QUAIN

Take that, OnStar.

Mazda joins a growing number of automakers capitalizing on the popularity of the iPhone to offer apps that cover free navigation, remote unlocking and roadside assistance. Mercedes will let you lock or unlock your car from an iPhone. Smart will soon let you play Internet radio stations and receive turn-by-turn directions from an iPhone app. Now, Mazda is introducing an app for roadside assistance.

Mazda’s Roadside Assistance iPhone app. Mazda’s Roadside Assistance iPhone app.

The Mazda Roadside Assistance App is complimentary along with the free roadside assistance provided under the warranty period (36 months or 36,000 miles). Drivers enter basic information, like the car’s vehicle identification number. Should the unforeseen then occur, like a flat tire, dead battery or accident, the owner can contact the closest service provider (via Cross Country Automotive Services) by tapping on the application’s icon.

The software will prompt the driver to make sure he or she has pulled off to a safe area or to dial an emergency number if not. Owners can also enter information to specify the problem, and Mazda’s call center will dispatch assistance. While you’re waiting for the tow truck, the app will periodically give you an estimate as to when help will arrive (so you can go back to posting on Twitter).

The primary benefit of the Mazda application is that it will find your location automatically. In other words, a tow truck can find you without having to rely on vague instructions like, “I just passed Exit 15 on I-95.”

Unlike the 911 service in Ford’s Sync or GM’s OnStar, calls are not made automatically when, say, a car’s air bags are deployed. The Mazda app cannot be operated via voice commands, either, should you be in real trouble. And the application lacks other features of, say, Smart’s coming application. There’s no turn-by-turn navigation, for example, or Bluetooth Internet radio function. Blackberry owners and Android phone users are also out of luck: the Mazda application works with only the iPhone 3G and 3GS models.

Still, Mazda’s app illustrates how smartphones are gaining a foothold in the car, becoming the new accessory to gain entry into services that previously required a monthly subscription and expensive built-in hardware.

March 25, 2010 – Gas Prices to Climb Above $3 for Spring

Bethesda, MD – March 25, 2010 – Prices at the pump are moving upward and will likely crack the $3 average just in time for motorists hitting the road for spring and summer road trips. While motorists can’t control the price of gas, they can save money by following a few simple steps from the Car Care Council to make sure their vehicles get maximum fuel economy.

“Although fuel economy is directly related to vehicle maintenance, quite often when gas prices rise, some motorists think they can save money by putting off needed maintenance,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “What they don’t realize is that neglecting routine maintenance can end up costing more. Simply checking the tires, air filters, spark plugs and gas caps can make a significant difference in the vehicle’s fuel economy and saves money.”

The Car Care Council offers these gas-saving maintenance tips:

  • Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
  • Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by 3 percent.
  • Replace dirty or clogged air filters on older vehicles to improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent.
  • Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon.
  • Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon.

Driving behavior also impacts fuel efficiency. The council offers these gas-saving driving tips:

  • Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 mph.
  • Avoid excessive idling. Idling gets zero miles per gallon. Warming up the vehicle for one or two minutes is sufficient.
  • Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city.
  • Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multi-purpose trip.
  • Don’t haul unneeded items in the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent.
